What is a Study Set of House Plans?

Study House Plan Sets are a set of plans you can use to obtain bids or view more information about a plan. Study sets do not include a license to build and the study set will be marked “not for construction.” Depending on the desiger, study sets may or may not be to scale and the information included in a study set varies. Check the plan’s information page to see what is included with a study set. In most cases, the price of the study set can be credited toward the purchase of the Standard Set for the same house plan within 6 months.

How Are Study Sets Different from Preliminary Sets?

Both Study Sets and Preliminary Sets can be useful for obtaining bids or preliminary HOA design review approval. Where Study Sets are for review only, some Preliminary Sets may include a license to build or use and/or modify the design concept. Study Sets typically include most or all of the sheets that would be included with a Standard Set, just scaled down and marked “not for construction.” Preliminary Sets usually only include a floorplan, elevations and a roof/framing layout to scale.
